Veterans Transform Uniforms Into Art
Thanks to my nephew Tom for tipping me off to this page about the Combat Paper project, a Vermont, USA based project that allows veterans to turn their uniforms into paper and thus into art that allows them to tell their stories by creating "cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beat and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war."
VERY interesting! As a museum worker, I would never have thought of it. Uniforms are one of the item-types we get through the door for donation the most, many of them are donated to us because we're the closest relevant institution to the donor (though frequently, the pieces being donated don't support our mission). I'd be delighted if somebody would do a similar project here in Canada, it would a neat other option that I could suggest to donors when they've offered me pieces that don't support our work (many of them are happy for me to forward their donation to other CF museums or like institutions).
